Random News From the Tour
18-Dec-98: James new album (not yet titled) should be released in late April/early May, and should be preceeded by the first single sometime in February. Most likely, “I Know What I’m Here For” will get the nod as the first single, though the band plan to return to the studio this week to work on “Fred Astaire”, which they’ve been having trouble getting a suitable studio recording of so far.
A tour of smaller UK venues will follow the album release in May, followed by a European tour, and possibly some co-headlining shows at Stirling Castle with the Stereophonics. Another large venue UK tour is tentatively planned for next December. There are currently no plans to tour the US, because of the costs involved.
There are no plans for a video release at the moment, as the band can’t find deal that would actually allow them to make money. This is also why there was no Best Of video release.
There were tentative plans for former James guitarist Larry Gott to make a guest appearance on stage in Manchester, but apparently some sort of problem with his arm prevented him from doing so. Evidently he’s been joining the band in the studio from time to time, and played on the original jam of new song “I Know What I’m Here For”. Word is, he was in the studio with the band on the day the Best Of went to number 1.
Tim has been offered a few acting roles, but hasn’t agreed to anything. Apparently, one of the offers was for a role in Heartbeat.
Both James side projects – Booth and the Bad Angel and Money are now defunct, as both were considered to be serious obstacles to James. Backing vocalist/guitarist Michael Kulas is continuing to write and demo new solo material, but no release is scheduled in the near future. Meanwhile, Saul’s side project, Celtic Cross, which was released in May, has finally been located in the “dance” section HMV stores across England. It is also available (though expensive) at CD Now. Full details, including the catalogue number, should you need to special order it, are available in the Related Releases Discography.
Tim Takes “Best Newcomer” Award
17-Dec-98: Tim Booth took time out from the tour to attend the Manchester Evening News Performance Awards in Manchester last Wednesday, where he was given the award for “Best Newcomer” for his work in the play Saved, in which he starred earlier this year.
James Wrap Up Tour
15-Dec-98: James finished their UK tour in Glasgow tonight, playing their second show at the SECC to a sold out crowd. By all accounts, the December arena tour, which saw the band playing to crowds ranging from just over 2,000 to just under 15,000 per night, was a great success. In the course of the tour, the band introduced a total of eight new songs from their upcoming album (due out in spring ’99), along with playing a variety of greatest hits and non-Best Of… tracks such as “Johnny Yen”, “Heavens”, “Lost A Friend” and “Top of the World”.
And the Tour Begins
04-Dec-98: James kicked off their tour tonight in Hereford, debuting 4 new songs, and playing “Heavens” and “Top of the World”, in addition to a handful of “Best Of” songs.
