Review: Shaun Astor at Tahoe Onstage

It was clear who attended [the co-headline tour] to see James, as a good portion of the audience members were on their feet, phones in the air while singing along to the group’s light-drenched renditions of their cerebral club rock. Singer Tim Booth would move in spastic motions beneath the strobes before climbing over the barrier from the stage and performing a final song, “Come Home,” while walking through the Grand Theatre’s aisles amidst the audience.

“Things then take a sinister turn. Picture Of This Place is a verse in when Tim stops everything. There’s a fight in the middle, he tells security to get in and sort it out which they do eventually, but not before he moves to go in himself to resolve it before Saul tells him not to. He’s visibly shocked though and the blood mixed into beer on the floor at the end suggests it wasn’t pretty. But from it comes a moment of beauty. A woman grabs his attention, whispers in his ear that she lost her husband a year ago and life’s too short and not worth doing that for. They change the set and play Moving On instead. Tim goes on what looks like a very brave and bumpy crowd surf to the sound desk and back, risking his foot to the alcohol-fuelled crowd, but safe for one idiot who grabs him towards the back, he’s returned safe and sound.”

Even though Tim’s restricted in his movement by damaged ankle ligaments, the power of these new songs, the most strident set since they reformed if not ever, still shines through brightly. “I can’t dance, but I can do a good hobble” he laughs, before replying to a query about the health of his leg with “it’s a foot.”

Ring The Bells gets more people up, you watch Tim look desperate to let loose as he waves his crutch up in the air and the top half of his body gyrates in time to the accelerating pace of the song. He urges those still seated or who thought they were coming to watch James Arthur to join in or go home at the end of it. He then sits down and sings Five-O in his chair, spinning round making it part of the act.

“We’re now thirteen songs into the night and it feels like there’s a big release of pressure as the opening bars of Tomorrow ring around the hall and those round the fringes throw themselves forward. It’s interesting to note here that even one of their best known and loved songs has to battle to sonically have the same energy of what’s gone before in the electric set which is testament to how James are moving further away from the heritage that bands of their generation seem every more desperate to cling to for financial reasons that destroys their creativity in the process.”

After two singles on Manchester’s Factory label, James signed to Sire Records in 1986. The major label issued the band’s debut album Stutter, prefaced by non-album single ‘Chain Mail’, as the band were touted by the press as the next Smiths.

After moving to another Warner imprint, Blanco Y Negro, James released their second album – the more traditionally melodic Strip-mine – in 1988. Single ‘What For’ should have been a massive hit but it wasn’t. Despite being lauded by some quarters of the music press, James was eventually dropped by the label.

After a self-financed label, they signed to Rough Trade and enjoyed indie hits with ‘Come Home’ and ‘Sit Down’. Then Madchester arrived, James joined another major, Fontana, and the rest is history…

Justhipper is the first compilation encompassing all of James’ recordings for the Warner Group across the mid-to-late 80s. Both albums have been remastered and are joined by all of the band’s non-album singles A and B sides and different mixes. The package ends with a rare, promotional-only interview with the band.

Issued in July 1986, and fuelled by enthusiastic reviews, Stutter reached No. 68 in the UK charts. The album was recorded at Liverpool’s Amazon Studios and produced by Lenny Kaye, guitarist with the Patti Smith Group. In 2007, The Guardian included Stutter in their 1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die.

After protracted recording sessions in 1987 at Rockfield Studios with Hugh Jones at the helm, followed by a remix, James’ second album Strip-mine was finally issued in September 1988. Promoted by the single ‘What For’, the LP peaked at No. 90 in the UK charts.

Housed in a deluxe foldout Digipak, this is the ultimate tribute to the early years of James.
